In the django docs it says that it uses the default template engine if it can't find a specific template engine that you've configured. As I have done this on several occasions it was never a problem. But I still don't understand why that would ever happen? A: Because by default Django has a hardcoded list of the most common template engines that you can use. The reason is that most Django projects are using the 'default' engine is because the default engine is 'django.template.backends.django.DjangoTemplates' which is the one that most users (including me) use. If you want to use some different engine you will have to explicitly add it to your template engines list. It has been added to the docs:
